What is Ephedrine and how is it used?

Ephedrine is a prescription medicine used to treat the symptoms of low blood pressure during anesthesia (Hypotension). Ephedrine may be used alone or with other medications.

Ephedrine belongs to a class of drugs called Alpha/Beta Adrenergic Agonists.

It is not known if Ephedrine is safe and effective in children.

What are the possible side effects of Ephedrine?

Ephedrine may cause serious side effects including:

  • chest pain, and
  • irregular heartbeats

Get medical help right away, if you have any of the symptoms listed above.

The most common side effects of Ephedrine include:

  • nervousness,
  • anxiety,
  • dizziness,
  • spinning sensation (vertigo),
  • headache,
  • nausea,
  • loss of appetite,
  • trouble sleeping,
  • fast heart rate,
  • pounding heartbeats,
  • sweating,
  • vomiting,
  • weight loss, and
  • difficult or painful urination

Tell the doctor if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away.
